Every year at PAX there is a significant rise in the presence of indie games and developers. This year was no different. The number of great indie games represented at PAX was pretty damn impressive and there were a few that really captured my attention. One of my favorites was the wacky and outrageous adventure title, Octodad: Dadliest Catch.
In Octodad: Dadliest Catch, you play the role of a loving husband and father, who just so happens to be hiding his octopodic identity from his family. The objective of the game is to master every day, household tasks. You mow the lawn, do the dishes, take out the trash, all of which are no challenge for the average man, but for an octopus in a suit, this can prove to be rather challenging.
This game is ragdoll paradise. During my first playthrough, I spent most of my time wildly flailing about, destroying everything in my path. The physics engine works perfectly for this outlandish adventure. After completely demolishing my bedroom and living room, I made my way into the kitchen where I found a raw fish in the refrigerator and began violently slapping everything in my proximity, which unfortunately mainly involved my wife. I wasn’t sure if there was a clear objective for completing the game and frankly I didn’t care. All I wanted to do was flail my floppy tentacles onto anything within reach.
Be sure to check out the original Octodad on the developer’s website.
This game is probably one of the only games worth upvoting on Steam Greenlight right now. I really hope the devs get their chance.
I spent a good amount of time talking with those guys at PAX. A really nice group. I sincerely hopes this does well for them.
