Greetings. I wanted to spread the word about a great thing going on right now known as Summer Games Done Quick 2013. This is a five day long marathon of video game speed running put on by Speed Demos Archive and Speed Runs Live, two of the premier speed running communities on the net.
The marathon is to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, one of my personal favorite charity organizations out there who’s purpose is to provide medical aid to those in need regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation, a more thorough explanation can be found at their site of course.
Donators can win prizes by donating during certain games, as well as a couple grand prizes by donating anytime throughout the entire marathon, and the site The Yetee, who makes t-shirts, has six t-shirt designs specifically made for this SGDQ marathon. The shirts are 11 dollars, and 3 dollars from every purchase goes to the charity as well, so if that feels like a more direct incentive, buy a shirt, I already have. But either way, every little bit helps, even if you can only spare a dollar, every bit adds to the pile, last years’ SGDQ raised over 45,000 dollars, and this year is looking to go far beyond that.
SGDQ is one of two marathons these two speed running sites put on together each year, the other, Awesome Games Done Quick, occurs in the winter, and tends to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. As you can tell already, this is a really amazing thing these two sites do, made up entirely of the desire to put a gaming hobby to good use, and I only wish I had gotten around to mentioning the marathon yesterday when it began, but better late then never. There is really no reason not to go check out the marathon, if nothing else, perhaps you’ll see a game in the schedule you’d like to see totally destroyed, or you’ll just stop in to throw a couple dollars at a great cause even if you don’t watch anything, either way, check it out, and spread the word.
