Did Nintendo Lose Sonic Exclusivity?

Gamenesia reported earlier today that a rather interesting sign was spotted at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg, Germany. Jazwares, the company behind Sonic toys and apparel, had a sign advertising the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon called Sonic Boom, but also a list of games available now and coming soon.

If you recall, Nintendo announced last year that they had entered an exclusive agreement with Sega to put out Sonic Lost World, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games: Sochi 2014, and one more exclusive Sonic game for the Wii U to be named later. You may also recall that Sonic Lost World was a mess, currently holding a 63/100 Metacritic, and didn’t sell all too well. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games also wasn’t so well received, with a 55/100 Metacritic.

As the sign states, a “New 2015 Title TBA” will be coming for the Wii U, but also for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. With no other titles being mentioned, did Nintendo lose their exclusivity for some reason or is Sega holding off on announcing anything else at this time? Why would they advertise a future release in 2015, but nothing else between now and then?

We’ll just have to wait and see, I guess.

  1. Has Sonic been confirmed for the Smash Bros. roster? If he has, then maybe they meant that? Imthought they said that all the titles were going to be out in 2013 though, so no idea why that is. Or maybe because the Olympics is Wii U only, they were counting a separate Wii U and 3DS version of lost worlds?

    1. Sega was supposed to put out 3 exclusives on the Wii U themselves, though, so I don’t think Smash Bros would count, or the cross-platform 3DS version of Sonic Lost World. Maybe there was some sort of clause in their agreement where if their exclusives didn’t meet a certain sales expectation, they could opt out of the third exclusive?

      1. Quite possibly, yeah. And since Sonic Lost World didn’t live up to many a gamer’s expectations, I wouldn’t be hurt if the Wii U missed out on yet another mediocre Sonic game.
