The Daily Clip: Ultimate Spinal Returns

Spinal was always one of my favorite classic characters and now this bony buccaneer has finally clanked and clamored his way into the new Killer Instinct. In celebration of this postmortem pirate’s return, I send Jago to the bone yard.

Spinal is awesome. His new character model looks incredible and Double Helix has completely reinvented the way he plays. He is the most varied and technical fighter in the Killer Instinct lineup right now and I can’t wait master him.

I’ve only played with Spinal for about a half hour, so I’m still learning all his subtle nuances. Managing “skulls” is a crucial part of his play style. You can activate different variations of moves based on the number of skulls you have stockpiled. Certain moves will cast down a plague skull that will drain the opponents Shadow Meter for several seconds. Spinal is designed to keep players guessing and his mix-ups make him very difficult to predict.

We hope you enjoyed today’s edition of The Daily Clip. Be sure to check back every day for more great videos straight from our Xbox One Game DVR.

I Mileson I

  1. Hands down, Spinal has the best character model, stage, entrance and win pose in the game. He’s totally different from what I expected him to play like, but his Skeleport, fast-dash, ability to curse players with skulls to drain meters and unpredictability make him yet another solid, balanced fighter in the KI arsenal.

Aw man, watching the ghost ship sail up and get taken under by a giant kraken during ultra combos.. A-mazing!

  2. The only issue I have with Spinal may actually be a coding issue or AI issue. If you play any of the offline modes, no matter the difficulty setting, and use his medium kick variant of the Skeleport (the one that ports you right in front of the opponent), the computer AI will always (and I mean always) attack you right as you come up. Even AI like Sadira who notoriously jump around a lot and fling webs will start attacking from half the screen away if you use the medium variant and it gets you caught every single time.
