Borderlands 2 was basically Borderlands with more Borderlands thrown in, and that was in no way a bad thing. According to Totalxbox, developer 2K Australia is currently at work on what’s being dubbed a “pre-sequel” to Borderlands 2, and will feature 4 new playable characters, new weapon types and will take place on the moon. No, that’s not a typo.
Taking place on Pandora’s moon, Elpis, this pre-sequel will feature 4 new playable characters; 2 of which you may already be familiar with, depending on just how much time you’ve invested in the original two games and their respective DLC packs. Wilhelm the Enforcer you might remember as a standard boss in Borderlands 2, and Athena the Gladiator appeared in the original Borderlands‘ General Knoxx DLC. Nisha the Lawbringer accompanies Fragtrap as the pair of new characters.
This new Borderlands 2 pre-sequel will also introduce two new weapon types in laser and cryo. The latter of which will freeze enemies as the name implies and I can already feel the giddies just thinking about all the nasty things you could do with a melee heavy character and a cryo gun.
Not much has been said about the new story, outside of you doing missions for “John”, who is a “lowly programmer” and will eventually be known as Borderlands 2‘s Handsome Jack. Since the game takes place on Pandora’s Moon, oxygen and gravity will both play a factor in terms of gameplay mechanics and combat. Oh, right, and there are jetpacks. Because Borderlands and stuff.
I don’t think any co-op game on the planet provides as much enjoyment for me as the Borderlands series, so the thought of freezing baddies while flying around on a jetpack has immediately shot this to the top of my hype list. All aboard!
No release date has been confirmed, although it’s assumed it will launch later this year for the Xbox 360 and PS3. We’ll probably hear more about the pre-sequel during this year’s E3 2014 conference.

Wait, what?
Australia has a game studio that isn’t indie?
2K has studios all over the world, apparently. It was news to me as well lol.
I live in Australia, and I was pretty sure the only big studio we had was Sega, which was shut doen a few years ago. Now we only have mobile devs, although we have good ones (like Halfbrick [Jetpack Joyride, Fruit Ninja]). I had no idea about 2K being here, haha.
