Watch Dogs Wii U Release Window Confirmed for Fall 2014

May 27th is probably circled on many of your calendars as that’s when the highly anticipated Chicago hack-a-thon Watch Dogs releases for all major consoles.. except the Wii U. We actually had our doubts that the Wii U version would even see the light of day, but according to Ubisoft’s online store, the launch window appears to be Fall 2014.

We still don’t have a concrete release date yet, but Wii U fans are going to have to wait at least 5 or 6 months longer to get their hands on Watch Dogs. According to Game Informer, Ubisoft decided to delay the Wii U version as it “required some additional development“, but it was also reported earlier this year that they wanted all of their focus on the Playstation, Xbox and PC releases to finish the game on schedule, then resuming development on the Wii U version once the others were complete. Ubisoft has also confirmed that graphically the Wii U version will be somewhere in between last-gen and current-gen releases.

Once we have a confirmed street date for Watch Dogs on the Big N’s Wii U, we’ll keep you posted! Anyone out there picking up the Wii U version at all?

My two cents — I’ll be picking up the PS4 version for the extra 60 minutes of gameplay, but the Wii U’s Gamepad could potentially introduce a lot of the off-screen hacking elements that the Xbox and Playstation versions are receiving through tablet/mobile support. Ubisoft is no stranger to the Wii U Gamepad, as they did a stellar job making clever use of the controller with the launch exclusive ZombiU. As someone who doesn’t own a tablet, if Watch Dogs lives up to my expectations I have no problem purchasing and playing the game for a second time to see how it handles on the Wii U. I also feel that Watch Dogs is going to make or break the Wii U’s third party cross-platform appeal, as it’ll give major developers an idea of what the console can really accomplish as far as power and sales figures go.

  1. I do not own a Wii U, so I’ll likely pick this up for PC. That said, my hype for this game was super high, higher than Bravely Default and Dark Souls 2, but the consistent delays have now firmly placed me in “meh” territory.

    1. I’m in the same boat, to be honest. This game has been hyped up for almost 2 years now. I still want to play it, but it’s not even in my top 5 this year.

  2. Oh god everything is delayed for the Wii U. I honestly NEED the dynasty warriors Zelda spin off, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. 4 now to justify the Wii U’s price tag.

    1. It’s definitely a bummer that Watch Dogs is being delayed on the Wii U, but there is still plenty to love that’s available right now to tide you over until the big releases =)

Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Sonic Lost World, ZombiU, Wind Waker HD. You won’t be disappointed.

  3. I have a PS4 and a Wii U. The extra hour of gameplay on the PS4 is a good perk, but the mention of alternate gameplay methods on the GamePad made me think about possibly getting it for the Wii U. I really, really like the GamePad. I only have like, 3 games for both systems right now lol

    1. Since they’re going to release at least 5 months apart, I’m definitely picking up the PS4 version at launch. I’m with you though, I absolutely love the GamePad and if any third party knows how to work it, it’s Ubisoft.

If the game ends up being good, I have no problem checking out the Wii U version in the fall to see how it turned out.

  4. I’m still debating picking this up. Methinks I’ll wait for the XBRO review but if it truly does come out on Wii U I may pick it up on that. I love the Gamepad and after ZombiU, I would love to see what they could do.

    1. Ubisoft tends to make great stuff, so I’ll be picking it up come launch day on the PS4 for the exclusive content. I do really want to see what they can pull off with the GamePad though.
