When Disney purchased Lucas Arts, there was hope that Star Wars games would return to their former glory. All we have so far are is a bunch of cancellations and a few announced developments.
The days of Tie Fighter and Battlefront were a far cry way from the lack luster titles that came later. The Force Unleashed games were received with a lukewarm reception at best, even though I personally enjoyed them. Even the online RPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic, was disappointing in many ways as it started out with big sales, but its subscription numbers dropped dramatically after the first few months. It couldn’t keep subscribers and eventually went free-to-play. Disney was quick, if not brutal, in breaking our hearts by canceling all projects in development and shutting down Lucas Arts completely. The studio wasn’t even given the chance to redeem itself with gamers. Remember how awesome Star Wars: 1313 looked?
Too bad that wasn’t the only game that hit the cutting board. Recently GameInformer ran an article about the demise of Lucas Arts and how it really started before Disney bought them out(see edition 250 of GameInformer magazine for the article). What they also showed, in an online article, was some of the game art for a cancelled Darth Maul game. You can check all the art in the original article here. The game must have been fairly deep in development as gameplay footage has also surfaced.
We’ll, sadly, never see these games. EA has exclusive rights to the Star Wars gaming franchise(sans mobile) until 2023. Rumors are out that EA Canada is working on an open-world game. It’s also been confirmed that Bioware and DICE are working on a new Star Wars: Battlefront game that could be promising, but so little is known about it.
No real fan wants to hate anything about Star Wars. We just want something better than what’s been delivered in the past. Perhaps getting the games out from under George Lucas and Lucas Arts will give other more focused studios control of development and keep any games like Lego Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles from ever seeing the light of day again.
Do you think that Star Wars games can make a turn around?
