Fatal Frame Sequel Soon to Haunt Wii U

Survival horror fans finally have something to look forward to on Wii U. Nintendo has partnered with Tecmo Koei to develop a new Fatal Frame exclusively for their latest console. Could this be the game that truly showcases the gamepad’s potential?

For those unfamiliar with the series, Fatal Frame puts players in the shoes of varying protagonists as they uncover horrifying secrets using the power of the camera obscura; a mystical camera with the ability to see the dead. Any survival horror fan owes it to themselves to try at least one game from the franchise. Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is quite possibly the scariest game of all time. I still haven’t played anything quite so unsettling.

So far we have no official release date or even a launch window for that matter, but just knowing it’s coming is good enough for now. The camera obscura’s controls would work perfectly with the Wii U’s gamepad and this is a fantastic chance for Nintendo to prove the worth of their generally cumbersome controller, especially when first part titles like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze aren’t even utilizing the second display.

Are you a Fatal Frame fan? Would a sequel make you buy a Wii U?

  1. Fantastic news. Fatal Frame is my favorite series, to the extent that I’ve both blogged about it and written a chapter in an upcoming book dedicated entirely to it. I never played the fourth installment, though, as I didn’t own a Wii at that point and was also intimidated by the need to import the game and then mod the system. If the new FF gets a domestic release, loath as I am to admit it, then yes, I might buy a Wii U just to play it. I’d at least consider it.

    1. Fatal Frame is a fantastic series and easily one of the best in the horror genre. Fatal Frame 2 did so much right. The scares were subtle when they needed to be and it was all about tension.

I never played the fourth one either, but I did own a Wii U. I’m hoping they give the new game a full-blown US release because I’m not importing a Wii U game. Right now, you might as well wait until Smash Bros drops to get a Wii U. There are a few amazing titles, but overall it’s mediocrity city.

      1. Agreed. Jumpy horror games like Dead Space are cool in their own right, but they just can’t compare.

Yeah, I get the impression that Nintendo’s seen better days. Seems like the 3DS is really where it’s at with them right now.

    1. The gamepad is the perfect controller for a Wii U game. Just imagine seeing nothing on your main screen and lifting the camera to see a horrifying ghost. That would be so cool!
