Bungie sure is stringing us all along when it comes to hard information about Destiny. They revealed another trailer, including game play, but still haven’t offered us many of the details that we are longing for.
The folks at Bungie have certainly kept tight-lipped about their upcoming release. The most we’ve heard from them of late was the departure of Marty O’Donnell and even that announcement carried it’s own lack of detail. The latest trailer, titled “The Devil’s Lair“, takes place in the old Russia part of the game space, pitting the players against one of the enemy types known as the Fallen. if you haven’t seen it, take a look at the video before we break it down.
The trailer started with all the logos and shows some planes flying in. They keep teasing vehicles, but we never get to see if we as players get to operate them. After the quick movie intro, we get to see some actual game play footage.
My first thought here was that I swear I have seen this exact game footage before. The way the player draws the gun up to look around looks eerily familiar. It also shows a very deliberate effort to show off the surroundings. You’ll see this happen several times throughout the trailer. My second thought was that there are only three players. The first person view accounts for one and we can see two companions. I thought Bungie had made a lot of talk about a four person squad? Maybe they just couldn’t find another employee to play with.
At about the 1:30 mark, the camera jumps out of the first person view to show the three players traveling down a path. I don’t think this is a cinematic in the game itself. It would seem out of place to just cut out like that to a different screen perspective. More likely, this was added as a transition in the trailer to move from one scene to the next. What I do question though, is how they created this. Is this a hint of a theater mode like we have in Halo or was this something they generated using a development kit? I wish I had the answer.
It was also nice to see a little PlayStation love happening. Look at the lower left to see the square and triangle buttons displayed as possible uses. I can’t say for sure, but I’ll guess this was captured from a PS4. Bungie has been playing pretty nice with PlayStation promising exclusive content and first beta access.
Take a quick and you may notice that unlike the player in our first picture, who had three weapons, this one only has two. This probably varies by which class you play as.
Notice around the 2:15 mark that when the player uses a special attack it jumps from the first perspective to third person. This happened very limited times in Halo, like when manning a turret or performing assassinations.
A few times in the trailer, you see a weapon get super-charged. It appears that if you dole out enough mayhem with your weapon, you’ll get rewarded by having that weapon deal extra damage for a brief period.
Next we see that, at least in this mission, there are objectives that players must complete before continuing. This makes me wonder if you have to have members of each class on a mission in order to complete it. Unless every class has different ways of handling task, as I don’t see that the other two players here have access to a Ghost.
In the next battle, we get to see one of the other players use their special attack. It looks like they fly into the air and throw three grenades that blow the crap out of their enemies.
I’m pretty sure this guy ran into the fight with the intent of dying so we could see a revive take place. Also, take note that in the lower left-hand corner is a respawn timer. This indicates that if your buddies don’t get to you in time you’ll still be able to get back in the game.
Ammo full shown on the screen tells me that the player is probably resupplying from fallen enemies(a fallen Fallen) just by passing over them. Obviously, this player can carry no more ammo.
Likely another class specific ability, we see two players take to flight. The third player does not and remains on foot. Thus suggesting they do not posses this ability.
…and this tells us when we should expect any more information.
This footage was taken from what Bungie is calling a pre-Alpha build. Something they cooked up in-house just for internal play test. The Beta may have some things changed by the time we get to play it this summer. Still no firm date on that though. Look for that to be revealed at E3. So we’ll be waiting until June 10-12 before we know any better.
The more I see of this game the less Halo I see in it. Sure, it will still have similarities, but the differences are starting to show as well. Watching this trailer definitely reminded me of Borderlands, but it also looked similar to Warframe. That Beta just isn’t coming soon enough.
Did this trailer sway you in anyway? Are you more or less excited? Did you see anything I missed?
