Today, 2K Games announced the release date for the upcoming monster infested co-op shooter Evolve. It looks like we have a lot to look forward to this Halloween.

Evolve invades Xbox One, PS4, and PC on October 21st, 2014 and is being developed by Turtle Rock Studios; the wildly talented team behind everyone’s favorite undead co-op series, Left 4 Dead. Those itching for confirmation of a Left 4 Dead 3 may have to wait for quite some time, but this studio’s upcoming title promises to “evolve” the co-op experience we all know and love. See what I did there?

The ambitious shooter combines cooperative and competitive multiplayer and pits a team of four hunters against a single, player-controller monster. Players must utilize each hunter’s special abilities and work together to tackle the deadly beast. Evolve will include multiple monsters, hunters, game modes, and more than a dozen maps.

Along with the release date, 2K Games also revealed an extreme amount of information about four brand new hunters. While these characters may technically share the same class names as their predecessors (Assault, Trapper, Support, and Medic), they are most certainly not simple texture swaps. Every single hunter in the game will have his/her own unique set of skills and weapons. The new medic Lazarus can shoot off a massive healing blast to regain his own health and the health of friends nearby. He can also raise an ally from the grave, something the previously announced medic Val couldn’t do.

The other three hunters added to the roster include Bucket, the new support character; Hyde, the new assault character; and Maggie, the new trapper. It’s refreshing to see a game focus so much on character variation and player preference. Turtle Rock Studios is adding a little something for everyone when it comes to the way various characters play. I would have been perfectly content with four static classes, but knowing I have even more options is always incredibly exciting. This is easily “Number 1” on my “Games to Watch” list this year.

  1. The more information they release on Evolve, the more excited I get. Between this and Destiny, the latter half of the year looks really promising for the co-op shooter genre.

    1. I can’t wait to strap my bro-op pants on. So far “next-gen” has really been lacking when it comes to great co-op games, but it looks like that will soon change.

      1. Crimson Dragon co-op not good enough for you!? /sarcasm

At least Dead Rising 3 had solid bro-op, and Ryse’s Colosseum has/had potential.
