Miles Plays Wolfenstein: The New Order (Part One)

Last week I picked up MachineGame latest entry in the nazi-blasting series Wolfenstein. I’ve been recording live streams of my playthrough over on my Twitch channel, but for those of you who don’t follow me or just missed it, here is chapter one of Wolfenstein: The New Order

In many ways Wolfenstein: The New Order isn’t quite what you’d expect from the series, but in this case it works incredibly well. The heavy focus on narrative and powerful story telling adds tremendous depth to the characters you meet and places you visit. At first glance, the game’s main character B.J. Blazkowicz looks like your generic FPS military meat-head, but even in the first hour or so of gameplay, it becomes apparent that he is much more. In the first chapter, he must make a deadly decision. One that changes the course of the entire game.

Wolfenstein: The New Order takes notes from many modern first-person shooters, but also stays true to its roots. The combat seems more like Bioshock than Call of Duty, but it still manages to incorporate exciting mechanics like power-slides and brutal executions. Some would probably consider the weapon-swapping, dual-wielding, and manual ammo pickup rather dated, but it seems to work wondrously for this game and the period it takes place in. I must commend The New Order for doing more than simply copying the control scheme from Call of Duty and calling it a day.

Earlier today I streamed part two of my Wolfenstein “let’s play” and I hope to have it published and posted tomorrow for your viewing pleasure. If you’re interested in getting in on the ridiculous conversations that typical ensure during my live streams, be sure to follow me on Twitch. I will be streaming the rest of the game over the course of this week and I’d love to have you folks chat with me while I play.
