These are indeed dark times for the internet and it looks as if more trouble is on the way. For some time, large corporations like Comcast and Time Warner have been controlling the speed at which internet is delivered to their customers. Comcast even put a stranglehold on Netflix that caused terrible download speeds for consumers using this service. Netflix was then essentially forced to pay Comcast money so their customers could access the download speeds they were already paying for.
Corporate lobbyists are pushing for the removal of our “open internet.” This would mean large Telecom companies would have even more control over internet speeds and pricing. We could potentially see more data caps for home internet and vicious increases in pricing. With so many borderline monopolies in this industry it will be tough for consumers to fight back if this bill is passed, but we can still act now before it’s too late. It’s only going to get worse. Comcast is thinking about capping subscribers’ internet to 500 GB/mo. I hate Comcast/time warner.
I really, really, really, hope that doesn’t happen. Internet would become a terrible thing for everyone. These companies already make a fortune, a cap is just senseless way for these bastards to squeeze more money from us.
