The glory days of Rockband seem even further behind Harmonix in light of the most recent news. The studio has decided to layoff 37 staff members. In an official statement, the move was called a restructuring but regardless of how you say it people loosing their jobs is usually a sign that a company is not in the best of shape.
“Harmonix is in the process of restructuring our organization to bring it into alignment with our current and future product development plans. Unfortunately, this means making the difficult decision to reduce the number of full-time staff. We sincerely appreciate the work of each and every one of these employees. Harmonix is working to ensure that those affected are well taken care of as we make this change.”
The studio goes on to state that current projects, like Fantasia: Music Evolved, will go on as planned and are still on track. It also stated that its rhythm based shooter Chroma is basically going back to the drawing board. The beta servers will be available until June 4 but the game is to be re-tooled based upon user feedback. Harmonix had just made some positive headlines by meeting and slightly exceeding its Kickstarter goal to remake Apmlitude. Perhaps the ingest of money did not balance with the additional work to remake the game.
Even the studio had to address concern about the Kinect. A spokesman stated that the restructuring was not based on Microsoft’s move to unbundle the Kinect from the Xbox One but one has to think it was part of the consideration. After all, any projected sales for motion based games like Fantasia: Music Evolved would have to be based upon the number of Kinect in people’s homes.
Let’s hope that the restructuring, as it is being called, helps the studio remain viable and able to stay on track. We should also hope that those 37 people affected are able to quickly find gainful employment.
