If you’re the curious type — I mean about video games — and have a burning desire to see for yourself what the difference is between the PS3 and PS4 when it comes to the Destiny beta, then here is your big chance. Take a look at the following videos and judge for yourself.
It is obvious, and expectedly so, that the PS3 version doesn’t look as good. There is a lot more darkness and a lot less detail. Most of the graphical sacrifices seem to be environmental and less on other players and enemies. I think the following two screen captures demonstrate my point fairly well.
The character model on the PS4 picture clearly has much better detail, whereas the PS3 version uses a lot more shading.
If you want to be super detailed about it, you could probably use a stopwatch and time all the loading screens and find that the PS4 is slightly faster. This point seems kind of moot since the PS3 probably isn’t taking any more time to load if you compare it to another game on the same platform. Plus, comparing between hardware platforms really isn’t fair to begin with since the PS4 is most likely loading a lot more data anyway.
What struck me is how similar the gameplay feels. Having played the PS4 alpha and beta, I can say that the PS3 beta holds up very well. You can watch my gameplay and see that I’m not as sharp on the PS3, missing headshots and such, but I think that is due more to the fact that I’ve gotten pretty comfortable with the PS4 controller. One thing that kept throwing me off was the fact that on the PS4 the ADS and fire buttons are L2 and R2, respectively, but the PS3 reverts back to ADS and fire being L1 and R1. Again, not a big deal, more my problem than anything.
Overall, I think the game will be just as good on all platforms with the only drawback on the previous consoles being graphic fidelity. Another cool thing I found, but did not expect, was that the characters I made and played on the PS4 version were available on the PS3 version. Also keep in mind that this is still a beta release and the final versions are likely to be much better. I will say that the difference between the PS4 alpha and beta is noticeable.
I’m looking forward to sharing and playing this Destiny with you and everybody else.
