Many movie adaptions have been announced for popular video game franchises. Some of these include several Ubisoft titles: Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, Rabbids, Far Cry, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon. Konami is planning a film based on Metal Gear Solid, Sony is working on the movie adaption of The Last of Us, Blizzard is bringing Warcraft to the big screen, and apparently a cartoon television series wasn’t enough, because Sony is also bringing Angry Birds to a theatrical release. Even Resident Evil has another one in the works, though it has been delayed due to Milla Jovovich’s pregnancy.
So what’s missing from this list? If you said that it needs many more zombies, you’d be correct! Lucky for you, Legendary Digital Media has the zombie fix you needed, as they’ve secured a director for the Dead Rising movie. Zach Lipovsky, director of Leprechaun: Origins, has been rumored to take on the mantle of the zombie gorefest.
Some of you may recognize Lipovsky’s name from Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett’s 2007 reality TV show ‘On the Lot’, a series that had budding director’s competing against each other for a development deal. So, basically ‘America’s Next Top Model’ for directors. Lipovsky made it to the final three.
Don’t expect it in the theaters, however. The movie will not be making the jump to the big screen, and instead will be debuting on Sony’s Crackle streaming service. After the initial debut, the film will be made available for on-demand, and as physical media.
No cast or date has been announced, but considering the emphasis Dead Rising places on slaughtering as many zombies as possible, it’s sure to be a complete bloodbath. I’m hoping to see at least one double chainsaw.
