Shortly after the death of the beloved actor Robin Williams, fans immediately took to Change.org with two petitions: Create an NPC in World of Warcraft to memorialize the actor’s love of the game; and another one to do the same act within Nintendo’s 2015 The Legend of Zelda for Wii U. Williams was a fan of both franchises, and even named his daughter Zelda.
While Nintendo is still on the fence and refusing to say ‘Yea’ or ‘Nay’, Blizzard has leapt into action, with not one, but several rumored references to the actor within the Warlords of Draenor beta.
The first, and most noticeable, of these virtual memorials is a reference to his role as Genie in the Aladdin movies. A lamp can be found, and when used, summons a genie named Robin who utters the line “Infinite cosmic power! Itty bitty living space.” For those in the beta, this lamp can be found on the island located near Talador. The second obvious reference to the actor can be found in a broken egg shell, with light and other items inside, a reference to his role on Mork & Mindy. There is reputed to be an alternate version of Williams’ character Mork as an NPC, though it is not yet currently in game.
A few other possible references may have been found, though there is no confirmation if these are coincidental or further references to Robin Williams.
- Toys scattered nearby the other tributes, a possible reference to Toys.
- An NPC dressed eerily similar to Mrs. Doubtfire, though like Mork, she is not yet placed within the game.
We can only hope that Nintendo will take from Blizzard’s enthusiasm to memorialize one of the greatest actors of our childhood.
