The internet is in a frenzy right now over the surprise release of some early access codes to the demo of Super Smash Bros for the 3DS. The demo officially launches for everyone next week, but lucky Platinum Members of Club Nintendo have been getting codes to download and play the game today! Lost in the commotion comes the confirmation that players can use their 3DS‘s as controllers when playing the game on Wii U.
The above image was tweeted by Kyle McClain followed by text which read, “The text on the top screen says ‘connect your 3DS with your Wii U to exchange customized characters, and you can use it as a controller.” Many speculated this a potential control option when playing the game, but this appears to be the first official confirmation of this theory.
This is awesome news for the folks looking to run a train on the 3DS version of the game before it comes to Wii U sometime this holiday season. Getting familiar with a controller can make all the difference when it comes to dominating in a fighting game and for those not interested in digging out the ol’ Gamecube controllers, it’s a more convenient option as well.

I can save some cash now!
That’s definitely a bonus! Don’t have to shell out a bunch of money on new controllers. Everybody can just bring their 3DS’s over.
If anything, Nintendo is making it so easy to get extra controllers on the Wii U, between this and using the original Wii stuff.
I love that they’re giving players so many different controller options. I don’t have to keep using the Gamecube controller 10 years later, but I can if i want.
Exactly!
It’s great that Nintendo aren’t making people shell out their whole wallets to be able to play in comfort. Now all I need is a Wii U!
It’s always refreshing to see a company not forcing you to buy a bunch of extra crap with the game. Oh wait… the Amiibo figures…
Hmm, in hindsight it’s the best marketing strategy ever. They’ve fooled everyone into thinking they have more money due to not having to buy a controller, then we’ll see an Amiibo in a shop and impulse buy it because of the extra money we’ve got. Dammit Nintendo! You’ve done it again!
Exactly! And we can guarantee the markup for Amiibo figures is much higher than a controller. I won’t buy any.. Unless they make one for Mega Man… or Ike… or Greninja… Dammit Nintendo….
10 minutes and an empty wallet later, and you own all the Amiibo figures
