The Xbox One exclusive fighter began its second season last week, bringing back two fan favorites in TJ Combo and Maya, as well as including a few new improvements to the original formula. Microsoft Studios and new developer Iron Galaxy also released a brand new launch trailer to give fans insight as to what’s in store for Killer Instinct over the next few months.
Season 2 will add 8 new fighters to the mix, with Cinder and Riptor being confirmed as returning characters. According to Xbox News Wire, the remaining roster will be filled with brand new characters, including a Babylonian sorcerer, an avenging ghost, a battle-hardened war golem, and more.
The original roster has also been re-balanced, adding in new moves and abilities. New mechanics help evolve the combat of Killer Instinct as well, such as the “aerial recapture” which allows fighters to grab and slam opponents in mid-air to segue in to their combos. Air Breakers and Air Counter-Breakers have also been added, offering more cat-and-mouse play for air juggles or those who like to play the jumping game.
Just like the Xbox One launch version, Killer Instinct‘s second season is free to download. You can enjoy a rotating roster and multiple game modes without investing your hard-earned cash, but if you’ve already purchased the original season you’ll notice a complete overhaul to the game’s menu, modes, and leveling system. You’ll also have access to TJ Combo for a limited time, as he’s the current freebie in the rotation.
Pricing remains similar to season one, offering the Ultra Edition for $39.99, the Combo Breaker Pack for $19.99, or the purchase of characters individually.
The Ultra Edition not only includes all 8 fighters as they release, but will grant early access to them prior to their availability in the Combo Breaker Pack or buying them a-la-carte. Ultra Edition owners will also receive 16 accessory kits, and 8 exclusive costumes designed by Kevin Bayliss, the art director for the original Killer Instinct arcade games. Not only that, but you’ll receive a perfect arcade port of Killer Instinct 2, complete with 1000G worth of achievements to unlock.
The Combo Breaker Pack includes all 8 fighters as they release on a monthly basis, starting with TJ Combo and Maya. Individual characters can also be purchased a-la-carte for $4.99, and you can always buy new costumes and accessories as they come available.
Have you picked up season 2 yet? What do you think of the changes so far?
