With December coming to a close, a new month means more free games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Consider this your one-week warning to pick up Worms and Volgarr the Viking on Xbox One, as well as SSX on Xbox 360.

Microsoft and developer Swery will ring in the new year with a free download of the batshit insane adventure game, D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die. The first season of this episodic adventure series stars detective David Young as he dives in to people’s pasts to solve crimes, namely the one involving the murder of his wife, Peggy. It was one of my favorite Xbox One exclusives of 2014, and hopefully going free for a month will entice more people to give it the ol’ college try.

Starting January 1st, Xbox 360 owners can download MX vs. ATV Alive, and just to prep you for the upcoming Wild Hunt sequel, The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings will be free from the 16th to the 31st.

Not a bad month overall, and with Sony upping the ante by offering the first retail freebie in December with Injustice: Gods Among Us – Ultimate Edition, here’s hoping Microsoft eventually follows suit and stops slacking on the Xbox One. Free games are great, but I’d like to see them at least try and stay competitive with Playstation Plus.
