As promised, Bungie rolled out their freebie to users today. You can pick it up by visiting the postmaster, who will have a “gift from an unknown benefactor”. There will be no need to visit the Cryptarch, as the package will instantly reveal a legendary item for you.
There is no guarantee as to what you will get other than it will be legendary. The RNG magic that Destiny uses for all other rewards applies to this free gift as well. No account will be taken as to what items you may or may not already own. At the very worst you can break the item down for materials if you do not want it.
Of course, trolls will be trolls and complain even when an item is free. Check out the replies to Bungie’s tweet announcing the deployment of the gift. Game forums are likely to be just as full of negativity about the items received.
Even when you try to do something nice, people have to hate. I’m not excited about the item I got (The Devil You Don’t pictured above) but I don’t feel the need to complain about it either. Bungie didn’t have to give away anything, but did anyway. They even told everyone it would be legendary, but that didn’t stop people from bemoaning about not getting an exotic reward. Bottom line to the situation is that you got something for nothing, it may not be much but you did almost nothing to get it. Even with the level of disdain I have for the game at this point, I won’t put a grudge against something that is free.

People never cease to amaze me. Everyone thinks they’re entitled and deserve everything they want, when in fact we should all be happy to receive anything at all. How many other companies give stuff to you without charging a fee?
I own Destiny, but have yet to play it. What are the odds that I’ll receive a gift? Was it only for people who played prior to today?
I will take a guess that you would had to have had a character created before they sent out the gift. Only way to be sure is to get into the game and see if you got one.
Kinda what I was thinking. Only way it makes sense. But you’re right, there’s only one way to make sure…man, don’t you just HATE it when you’re forced to play video games? 🙂
I hate it when I’m forced to stop! 🙂
Apparently playing the demo once in November was enough! 🙂 Received the LDR 5001 sniper rifle as my gift. Did I do good? I feel like I did really good…haha.

I got a Pulse Rifle, I don’t like pulse rifles, but I won’t complain about it, it was a freebie, and if i don’t use it, it gives me some energies for upgrades.
I just find RNG really disheartening. Me and a friend regularly run weeklies and nightfall together. Last 4 nightfall’s we’ve done, he got 4 exotics, I got shards and one legendary machine gun.
They could fix the RNG in one of two ways. One would be to make the R a little less random and take into account what you already have. That is a little bit harder since they would have to track everything have(maybe even had) and make a generator to account for it. This is sort of what they promised to do with drops from the Crota raid but only from that raid and not the rest of the game. The other way would be to increase the drops and their level. A large amount of commom ittems wouldn’t help but stop dropping them after a player reaches level 20 and make drops happen more often would be an idea.
I got a decent pulse rifle that I will most likely not use. No complaints though. I am glad they did something, even if it is this small.
