Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor Gets New Trailer, Releases October 7th

Upcoming open-world Lord of the Rings-based action/adventure game Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor has received a brand new trailer, entitled Banished from Death, and will officially release on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on October 7th, 2014. Check out the new trailer below!

Featuring an exploration and combat system very similar to the Assassin’s Creed series, Shadow of Mordor sets players in the shoes of Talion, a Ranger resurrected by Wraiths to slay the orcs that killed his family. The storyline will take place between the events of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and will feature an open-world environment to explore with optional quests to undertake as you see fit.

In addition to basic ranged and melee combat, Talion has access to Wraith powers that allow him to manipulate the will of his enemies and teleport to different locations. Players can advance Talion’s play-style as either a Ranger or Wraith through in-game skill trees, with Ranger focusing more on stealth and combat. Unique to Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is the Nemesis system, causing enemies and friendly characters to develop alongside Talion depending on your in-game actions. For instance, an orc that survives an encounter earlier in the game will reappear later on, remembering who you are and adjusting their tactics accordingly.

Pre-ordering Shadow of Mordor will get you the Dark Ranger Bonus Pack, which includes the Dark Ranger character skin, an exclusive challenge mode and access to online leaderboards (which is an odd bonus, if you ask me). What’s your take on the game so far? I’m curious about the Nemesis system and how it actually plays out in-game. It sounds neat on paper, but I want to see it in action.

    1. I was actually turned off by the earlier footage until I saw the Wraith abilities and saw the Nemesis system in action. I’m always cautious with licensed games, but aside from the character models looking a little wonky, this one is turning out good so far.
