Last month, Bungie was still on the fence about whether or not players would be able to carry the characters they made, and their storyline progress, over to the full-retail game. Well the axe has come down today, as Bungie announced that it will not be allowing players to save their characters. Probably a good thing that players were only allowed to reach level 8 in the beta.
“The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled. Although there’s no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the Beta Build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst.” – Tyson Green, Bungie designer
While this does make sense to an extent, it’s still rather disappointing. At the very least, Bungie could have allowed players to save their character appearances, something that Square Enix allowed players to do during the second phase of the beta for Final Fantasy XIV 2.0: A Realm Reborn for PS4.
Then again, this isn’t the first time Bungie has come up with a rather lackluster excuse for something.

I’m only upset I’ll lose the actual levels I’d earned, but overall I do understand it was just a beta. If I’d had more time for my character to grow on me, or we were deeper into the storyline than we were allowed, there might be some resentment. Overall, I had a great time with what we were allowed to experience, but can’t wait to start fresh on a finished and – hopefully – polished game.
Yeah I’m happy that the beta kept everyone to low levels, otherwise it would have hurt more. It’s like in Heroes of the storm, you can get pretty high in the levels and buy costumes but you lose a good deal of it when they do a wipe. That’s where it hurts
